Following the growth of the NCAA Tournament to sixty four teams in 1985, Heathcote returned the Spartans, led by the long run MSU all-time scoring leader, Scott Skiles, to the Tournament with a fifth-place finish within the Big Ten. MSU again reached the NCAA Tournament the next year after finishing third within the Big Ten with a 23–8 document. Led by Skiles and Darryl Johnson, they advanced to the Sweet Sixteen before losing. The 1979 National Championship group was coached by Jud Heathcote and included event MVP Magic Johnson, Greg Kelser and Jay Vincent.
Izzo coached the Spartans to their second national championship in 2000 with an 89–seventy six victory over Florida. Izzo has turned Michigan State into a perennial basketball powerhouse.
